Background
Current Graduate Experience
- Not many people know that I actually lost my full ride scholarship a few weeks after the acceptance deadline, so I had to take out a loan to cover tuition and rent. Apparently USF didn't meet their criteria, but I was told I can reapply to a different school the following year if I wanted to keep my scholarship. This was a really hard decision, but I decided to attend USF regardless and I'm just hoping everything works out in the end
- I'm either taking 2 or 3 classes per semester which leaves me a lot of time to work and join clubs on campus. I joined a couple of clubs to meet people, but given that they only meet about once a month I'm finding that task pretty difficult. The fact that I don't live on campus and that I'm older than most people doesn't help either
- I've had a lot of fun exploring the city. There's always so many things to do. I joined a couple of Meetup groups which have been really entertaining. There's still a couple of places I plan to visit by the end of the school year because I may or may not stay in SF after my graduate program
- The worst experience I've had since attending USF happened during my first winter break as I was driving home. I rolled my van on the freeway 7 times which completely totaled the van. I walked away with a broken finger where the only thought that lingered in my mind was that "I was almost home". I appreciate my friends and family for being there for me during this difficult time
- I moved into a new place with 2 other students in my grad program at the end of my first year. This has been a huge improvement from my previous place where everyone was 30+ years old, and didn't care to socialize with each other. My new roommates are fun to be around, and definitely great living with people you actually know
Undergraduate Experience
- Definitely one of the best experiences of my life. I met so many people and made a lot of friends. I joined a lot of school clubs, and participated in many events. I was president of a couple of different organizations, and I enjoyed every moment of it
- I participated in Ohana which is one of the 3 Jump Start programs a freshman can choose to participate in. Not many people know that I actually applied to Stepping Out, but things turned out pretty great in the end! This single program greatly enhanced my experience
- The people who lived on my floor freshmen year became some of my closest friends. We sometimes didn't know what we were doing, but I think everything turned out great in the end. I'm still a little curious to know who left that special gift on my door that no one ever took credit for, but I thank you for making my day a little brighter
- I fell for a women who apparently never shared my feelings. After we broke up she said she only dated me because she was lonely. As hurtful as this was to learn I still enjoyed the time we did spend together. I just wish that I knew how you really felt beforehand
- I tried triple majoring with Computer Science, Math, and Physics but I was denied by administration because it would make the school seem to easy. I even presented a 4-year schedule showing that it was possible but that didn't work either. I ended up staying for 5 years but I thoroughly enjoyed my time there also also
- I joined the Phi Delta Theta fraternity my freshmen year, and I don't regret any moment of it. I finally had a group of guys to hang out and bond with. I became friends with so many awesome people that I truly believe I wouldn't have had the pleasure of meeting if I hadn't joined. Looking back at it now, I wish I had devoted more time to get to know everyone!
High School Experience
- Took the hardest classes offered simply because I was bored. I didn't really have any school spirit, but this is where I found my passion for computer science! I got a Cisco Certified Network Associate degree my junior year.
- I regret not having a MySpace or Facebook in high school because I lost touch with a lot of friends, but I have reconnected with a few throughout the years
- I was encouraged to apply for the Gates Millennium Scholarship Program, and I received it! I wasn't actually planning on going to college even after receiving this because I got offered a great job in Portland, but after some convincing I applied to Willamette University and also got accepted!
Ancient Times
- Born and raised in California. I grew up in Bell Gardens, but moved to Riverside before I started 3rd grade. The day after I graduated from middle school my family and I moved to Salem Oregon
- My brother, sister, and I spent most of our time at the Don Day Center in Fontana. We went there after school and on the weekends just to play games. If I remember correctly, I had to beat my sister in a pool tournament to get first place!
